Congressman Mark Harris to Sheriff McFadden: ‘Take a Leave of Absence or Resign Immediately’

WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Mark Harris (NC-08) called on Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden to step down immediately following multiple serious allegations of misconduct and maladministration.

In a letter addressed to Sheriff McFadden, Congressman Harris wrote, “When public confidence erodes due to serious allegations of misconduct, a leader must step aside.”

The Congressman highlighted several allegations of misconduct against McFadden, including the misuse of deputies for personal errands—such as chauffeuring officials to strip clubs—unjustified employee terminations, and creating dangerous conditions at the detention center.

“North Carolinians deserve a sheriff who prioritizes the law above personal interests,” Congressman Harris said. “For the sake of public trust, you should take a leave of absence during this investigation or resign immediately.”
