Rep. Mark Harris fights against foreign interference in American classrooms
WASHINGTON, DC — On Tuesday, Representative Mark Harris (NC-08) introduced the No Contracts for Foreign Adversaries Act – a bill that would require universities and colleges to disclose contracts with countries of concern.
Representative Harris said, "Americans send billions of taxpayer dollars to colleges and universities, so we deserve to know if these schools have contracts with our enemies. North Korea, China, Russia, and Iran are not looking out for America's best interest and the next generation should not be subjected to the influence of foreign countries with ulterior motives. For too long, colleges and universities have gotten a free pass to spend federal dollars with little oversight, but American taxpayers are demanding transparency."
Under this legislation, any university that knowingly or willfully fails to comply could face fines or be ineligible to participate in Title IV programs for two institutional years.
Co-sponsors include Rep. Burgess Owens (UT-04) who chairs the House Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Development.
